How to Tell If Your Roof Has Storm Damage
In her worst moments, Mother Nature can really take a real toll on your roof. High winds, hail, heavy rain, and lighting can all cause serious damage. After a storm, take a look around to determine if there’s been any damage to your roof. When you do find storm-related roof damage, you should have it fixed right away. Here’s a list of things to do if you suspect storm damage to your roof:
- Check Gutters and Downspouts for Signs of Hail Damage
In some cases, you can recognize signs of hail damage to your roof without getting on it. Check the areas around your drain downspouts. If you see concentrations of black mineral deposits where the water exits, there may pieces of your roof that broke free during the storm.
- Look for Hail-Sized Dents
Heater caps and roof vents are often made of a soft metal material that easily dents in a hailstorm. Check these objects for hail-sized indentations to get an idea of how hard the storm hit your roof. Your aluminum gutters may also show signs of hail.
- Check for Loose or Missing Shingles
Gusts of wind from storms and tornadoes can pry off your roof’s shingles. After a heavy windstorm, look for missing and off-center shingles. Test to see that the shingles are still fastened by lifting them up at the bottom corners. Damaged shingles could allow water to pool and leaks to develop.
- Investigate Exposed or Loose Nails
Nails may become loose or exposed as a result of the storm. If you see this, it’s a sign of a problem. Water will now be able to flow into the holes that the nails used to occupy, increasing your chances of developing a roof leak.
- Be Wary of Changes in Energy Bills
If you notice a significant change in your heating and cooling bills after a storm, it could be an indication that your roof suffered damage. Vulnerabilities in your roof let air from the outside come inside, making your air conditioning appliances work harder.
